Date: 8/23/2077 | The Center for Research and Sustainable Development, Nepal (Creation), with the financial support of the World Bank and the facilitation of the Better Chitwan, has supported the independent sanitation workers from the Landfill Site of Bharatpur Metropolitan City and Sanitation workers from Waste Management Group Pvt. Ltd. A total of 51 sanitation workers have been provided assistance and security materials today. Pratishtha Shrestha, Program Manager of Recycler Saathi Project, said that the daily work of the sanitation workers in landfill site not only helps them in earning a living but also helps the community to reduce the unsafe waste disposal and dumping by segregating them for further recycling.
On behalf of Better Chitwan, Suvarna Ghimire led the program while Bhoj Narayan Kandel, Coordinator of Way Group Nepal and Diwakar Shrestha, Coordinator of Sandesh Foundation Nepal were also present. “Sanitation workers had to take a lot of risks while working in the garbage and no one even used basic safety equipment. After the need assessment and after a continuous study of about two weeks with the help of Research and Sustainable Development Center, Nepal (Creation) we are now able to support important safety equipment to them.” Sagar Karki, the founding chairman of Better Chitwan, said.
The sanitation workers were provided with essential safety equipment including maks, gloves, shoes and safety jumpsuits. Also Dr. Subash Basnet and a team of health workers provided health counseling and first aid services to the workers.
